Flying Farting Llamas

Llama_Dance.png

In a small mountain valley, there is a herd of llamas that can rocket into the air using their fart power! They take to the skies, performing beautiful manoeuvres, but one can’t quite seem to get a handle on it. He runs out of gas, and crashes into the field below.

The Brief

Flying Farting Llamas was a 2nd year collaboration between myself and Alex Joy at UWE Bristol. Our aim: to produce a 1 minute comedic short suitable for pre-school children.

The Process

The style was inspired by the vibrancy of Neo-Andean culture and the character styles of children's illustrator Benjamin Chaud. At the time, the success of Spiderman: into the Spiderverse inspired us to make this a 3D/2D hybrid piece, which really helped define the playful aesthetic.

The models were made, rigged and animated solely in Maya by myself and Alex. They were then moved in TV Paint to add the colourful farts. The final piece was then composited into After Effects to add all of our fun shakes and spins!

The Outcome

Flying Farting Llamas was an exciting challenge as our first 3D film, but the feedback was tremendous. We even won the coveted Lucy award at our yearly Christmas party, where the films are judged by our lecturer's children. However, we hope all ages can still indulge in a cheeky bit of fart humour.
